Really enjoyed reading this! But I couldn’t watch the majority of what you listed, sadly. I need my horror to be pretty tame—-never supernatural, only sometimes gore, only a certain kind of psychological, no home murders…I’m pretty limited lol. My mom however is a horror queen, so I still grew up on Stephen king movies (maybe why I’m petrified of everything now?!)
Haha I feel like being traumatized by Stephen King at an early age will either make you a lifelong fan or make you avoid the genre altogether. Little middle ground.
i love the "not for me," which as it happens is precisely what i'm into; and your likes are what i'm absolutely too scared to watch.. but, give it time. curious what you think of Longlegs (and Osgood Perkins) as a Kurosawa/horror fan. Osgood Perkins' stuff definitely checks some of those boxes in that former category.
I expected to like it but it just fell flat for me! Could be a problem of being overhyped. Visually, there was a lot I liked about it. It’s crafted really well and I liked just looking at it. But it just felt dull. There was no heartbeat to it. To be fair, I’m sick and maybe wasn’t the best audience. I should probably rewatch (but can’t say I feel drawn to)! What did you think about it?
I love this! Saw the Catholicism bit and was wondering 'hmmm, i'm wondering if she's seen Midnight Mass' but then I saw the Flanagan shoutout. I agree that he can be super schmaltzy but sometimes he pulls it off (there were a couple really beautiful/actually scary movements in Midnight Mass). I'm not a huge M Night Shyamalan fan (very hit or miss!), but one of my favorite unexpectedly scary scenes is that one where Joaquin Phoenix is sitting in the dark room watching the captured video of the alien. It gives me shivers thinking about that (but I also always laugh at how he responds lol)

haha yes! we rewatched Signs not too long ago (one of the few I can get my husband to watch with me), that moment is always so good.
Midnight Mass felt like it was made for me. I loved it. I think Haunting of Hill House is still my favorite of his, though.
Criterion channel is showing a bunch of Japanese horror movies right now that I’m excited to watch, including Audition!
One of my favorite movies is Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper, with Kristen Stewart. It does the supernatural and liminal beautifully!
Ooooh yes, I really liked Personal Shopper! Such a vibe. And I think I finally need to sign up for Criterion.
Loved this. Literally laughed out loud too at the idea of a boyfriend saying you reminded him of Shirley Jackson.
haha it’s been over 15 years and I’m still like…what exactly did he mean by that…
